In the early 2000s, the supercar world was full of exciting new cars. Porsche had the Carrera GT, Ferrari made the Enzo, and Ford brought the GT.
But Mercedes-Benz and McLaren took a different path. Together, they created something special. The Mercedes SLR McLaren.
What made the SLR so special
The SLR wasn’t just about going fast. It was made to offer a rare mix of power, luxury and comfort for everyday driving – something most supercars didn’t focus on back then.
It has a strong 5.4L supercharged V8 engine with 617 horsepower. Going from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds and reaching a top speed of 208 mph.
Even with all that power, the SLR is surprisingly comfortable, with high-quality materials and modern tech inside. Its design blends a modern look with classic Mercedes style, including the famous gullwing doors on some models.
Its engineering highlights
The SLR had some great tech for its time:
- A carbon fiber frame that made it strong but light
- A smooth 5-speed automatic gearbox, which is rare for supercars
- Big brakes with cooling systems for strong stopping power
- Aerodynamic parts like a front splitter and a rear spoiler
This car wasn’t just for racing – it was made to be driven and enjoyed every day. The SLR is a perfect mix of speed, comfort and style.

Introducing the 722 Edition
When the SLR’s production was ending, Mercedes and McLaren launched the 722 Edition. This was a stronger, more focused version named after Stirling Moss’s famous 1955 Mille Miglia race win.
The “722” comes from the start time of the race, 7:22am, on Moss’s car.
This special edition has:
- More power, with 641 horsepower
- Lowered and stiffer suspension for better handling
- Bigger brakes and lighter wheels for improved performance
- Carbon fiber details and a more aggressive look
- A sportier interior with Alcantara and carbon fiber trim
The 722 Edition took everything great about the SLR and made it even better.
Beyond the Coupe
The 722 Edition also came as a Roadster – a convertible version with the same power and style. Only 150 Roadsters were made, making them more sought after.
For track lovers, there was also the 722 GT. A race-only, stripped-down version built for serious competition.
