Porsche 911 3.2 Speedster

The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster is a rare and highly sought-after model, part of the iconic 911 series. Porsche designed the Speedster to pay homage to the original 356 Speedster of the 1950s, focusing on driving purity and design simplicity. Here's an overview of this special vehicle.

Only 2,065 units were produced, making it a limited edition. Of these, 171 were the more rare "narrow-body" or non-Turbo-look Speedsters, while the remaining were the "Turbo-look" wide-body variants.

The car featured a manually operated low-slung, lightweight soft top with distinctive double-bubble rear tonneau cover.

Most 1989 Speedsters came with the wide "Turbo-look" body, borrowing the fender flares from the 911 Turbo for a more aggressive stance. The windshield was much lower and more raked than a standard 911, enhancing the sporty, minimalist look of the car.  Stripped-down for weight savings, the car had manual windows, and the emphasis was on driving rather than luxury. However, it still retained some comfort features like leather seats.

Powered by a 3.2-liter flat-six engine, the same as in the 911 Carrera 3.2, producing 214 horsepower through a 5-speed manual transmission, delivering a classic, engaging driving experience producing an impressive 0-60 in 6 seconds and a top speed of  Approximately 150 mph (240 km/h).  Independent front and rear suspension using torsion bars Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, which were ventilated to improve stopping power.

The majority of 1989 Speedsters came with the "Turbo-look" package, which included wider fenders, upgraded brakes, and the suspension from the 911 Turbo and to keep the car light, Porsche eliminated many of the luxury features and kept the design minimalist, in line with the original Speedster concept from the 1950s.

The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster is a highly collectible car due to its limited production, unique design, and connection to Porsche's heritage. It has become one of the most desirable 911 models from the 1980s.

The 1989 Speedster set the stage for future Speedster models, which Porsche has released sporadically over the years. It represents a pure, enthusiast-focused driving machine that stands apart from the more luxurious or technology-laden 911 variants of its time. This model remains a significant piece of Porsche history, embodying both the brand’s engineering prowess and a nostalgic connection to the simpler, rawer sports cars of earlier decades.

HISTORY

Supplied new by Merlin Chesterfield Porsche on the 1st September 1989 to Mr Taylor, this is one of just 2,103 Speedsters produced of which 129 were RHD and only 64 were to UK `C16′ specification. This prime collector example has covered just 4,178 documented miles with 13 dealer visits. The last being in July 2024 to Porsche Centre Cambridge at 4,168 miles for a major service to include brake fluid change with an accompanying invoice for £3331,57. Such was the appeal of this rare car, the dealer contacted the owner while at the facility to ask if it could be included in their Destination Porsche site launch along with five other exclusive high value Porsche models. As the star attraction the service Manager of 32 years wrote to the owner after the event stating that this is ‘one of the best examples he has ever come across,’ the letter is included in the history file. Last sold in 2016 as an Approved Porsche by Porsche Centre Leeds and supplied with all handbooks, manuals, Speedster supplements and spare keys, this example will appeal to the most discerning Porsche collector.
